SotD: Scolipede

Ability: Swarm
Nature/Item: Jolly@Focus Sash / Life Orb
EV Spread: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Speed

Moveset:

  • Swords Dance
  • Megahorn
  • Rock Slide / Poison Jab
  • Earthquake

Scolipede is one of my favorite pokemon to use! It’s movepool is a bit shallow, but it’s very fast and has access to swords dance and STAB megahorn. You want a Jolly nature to utilize that base 112 speed plus you will still hit hard with one swords dance boost. Focus sash is nice to have for one guaranteed Swords Dance and as a surprise and if no rocks are up . Life Orb is another option if you rather have more power and rather not risk having to deal with priority users with sash. You definitely want max IVs in speed and attack since the point of this SD set is pure power and speed. Megahorn is its main attack move here. A lot of things aren’t going to enjoy a STAB Megahorn and if you have a sash on or low enough to hit swarm range it’s going to hurt more. Rock Slide is for coverage to hit flying types for super effective since flying resists its main STAB and is immune to EQ. Poison Jab can be another option if you want to go with Dual STAB, but it won’t have as much coverage. Earthquake is the best for the last slot since it hits super effective for steels. The only thing holding Scolipede back a bit is its defenses and many weaknesses. Even then don’t underestimate Scolipede it can outspeed and OKHO a nonscarfed Latios and Latias.

SotD: Accelgor

Ability: Sticky Hold
Nature/Item: Timid @ Life Orb
EV Spread: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

Moveset:

  • Bug Buzz
  • Focus Blast
  • Giga Drain
  • HP Rock

Accelgor’s defining trait is its Speed easily, sporting a base 145 Speed and a base 100 Sp. Atk makes it a REALLY potent revenge killer on just about every single non-scarfed/boosted Pokemon in the game. Bug Buzz is probably the best STAB move it could ever hope for, and with Focus Blast and HP Rock you get good coverage on the things that would otherwise resist in terms of Steels and Flyings respectively. It doesn’t hit TOO hard though, so you won’t be getting any OHKOs from full unless you’re firing off a Giga Drain on an Omastar/Rhydon or an HP Rock on a Moltres - there are a LOT of things in RU that fall to the coverage that Accelgor has and it’s for this reason that it has a solid place there. I don’t really feel the need to explain much more beyond this since it’s really just an all out attacking set so yeah

jonthebomb asked:

can you do an accelgor set please?

Sure, I’ll take care of this

Guys, note that I’m really only doing these at my own leisure now and I kinda feel like shit at the moment so I might as well make something out of it

SotD: Octillery

Ability: Moody
Nature/Item: Modest @ Leftovers
EV Spread: 252 HP / 252 Sp. Atk / 4 Speed

Moveset:

  • Substitute
  • Protect
  • Soak
  • Energy Ball

Just note above all else that you should only use this in a VERY casual setting, seeing as anyone that knows the first thing about competitive knows that the ability Moody is the only thing in the Pokemon metagame to get banned COMPLETELY (yes, even from Ubers) because it’s that freaking OP. In case you don’t know how it works, Moody sharply boosts a random stat (Attack, Defense, Sp. Attack, Sp. Def, Speed, accuracy, or evasion) at the end of a turn and drops another - it’s like an auto-Acupressure with a drop attached for balancing purposes.
But once upon a time I saw a video that used this set and oh my god it’s freaking ridiculous: Sub and Protect to stall for some time while you get some good boosts - this set is such a crap shoot when it comes to it, so you’ll wanna set up on something slower to get a Sub safely then just Sub Protect as much as you can until Def/Sp.Def/Evasion kick in. The last two moves are your modus operandi: Soak changes any Pokemon typing to purely Water while Energy Ball ensures you will get a super effective hit on anything that chooses to stay in. If they switch out, great - free turn to get even more Moody with your stats. You just need a bit of time to generate what you need but after 8 or so turns it really does turn into something dangerous.

This is less of an actual set to use and more of a “why was Moody banned” talking point - Smeargle got it too so amidst the Sporing/Subbing/Shell Smashing, it would be getting even MORE boosts to pass out and Smogon just said NO to that because it’s ridiculous. Lol.

SotD: Blastoise

Ability: Torrent
Nature/Item: Modest @ Choice Specs
EV Spread: 252 Sp. Atk / 252 Speed

Moveset:

  • Surf
  • Water Spout
  • Ice Beam
  • HP Grass / Fire

How do you make a Pokemon with two gigantic cannons on its back hit even harder? Give it a Choice Specs. Start Water Spouting right out of the gate whenever you can then start firing off Surfs when you get below 2/3rds, those are gonna be the things that lay on the hurt the most. The fun part comes when people underestimate the damage they’ll take because Blastoise is more often than not a more bulkier set, so surprise that Registeel that comes in to absorb your Toxic with a couple of hard hitting Water attacks and see how much he enjoys it. Ice for coverage, and HP Grass is there PURELY for Gastrodon and Quagsire but you can put HP Fire to nail those Registeels for SE damage. However, you will lose coverage on Slowbro so just make sure you adapt it to the rest of your team.

SotD: Umbreon

Ability: Synchronize
Nature/Item: Bold @ Leftovers
EV Spread: 252 HP / 148 Def / 104 Sp. Def

Moveset:

  • Wish
  • Protect
  • Toxic
  • Heal Bell

The mark between a competitive player and a casual is the thought process when it comes to using Umbreon: I cannot tell you how often I’ve run into someone with an offensive set (without Curse) and it kills me to see it. Umbreon’s stats were tailored to be a full on defender and it does its job alarmingly well. Anon asked for a mixed wall Umbreon, so here you go; with the EVs provided, its Def and Sp. Def are even at 322 for each which is not Skarm/Bliss tier but being able to peak 300 in both AND have almost 400 HP - you’d best believe that’s something to write home about. The Umbreon I used in yesterday’s battle on the livestream was designed to be full on team support in terms of passing Wishes and using Heal Bell to get rid of rogue statuses on the entire team (had a para on Haxorus yesterday, could’ve healed it off if I played it a little more carefully) and doing a bit of Toxistalling with Wish/Protecting if you need to. Victini makes an excellent partner to it mainly because Poison and Steels will wanna come in on it to shut it down so you can go out to it and have appropriate STAB to deal with either. Umbreon’s role is much like its coloring and design - shadowing its teammates and otherwise being very hard to get rid of. There are many other sets you can run on it including sets with Payback to get some reliable damage and it’s recommended so you’re not Taunt bait, but just play smart and know your Taunting threats (or scout first, doesn’t hurt to Protect if you’re not sure) and it makes a very efficient pivot switch that can stay in as long as it needs to in order to play doctor.
